Lady Gaga's Meat Dress: Art or Outrage?
There’s only one question we’ve been debating this morning: was Lady Gaga’s meat dress real or fake? And, if it was in fact a prime cut of beef, is it art or just plain gross?
It’s certainly got PETA up in arms (and put us off our breakfast).
‘Meat is the decomposing flesh of an abused animal’, said a PETA rep, ‘who didn’t want to die, and after time spent under the TV lights, it would smell like the rotting flesh that it is and likely be crawling in maggots—not too attractive, really.’
Charming!
I supposed we shouldn’t be surprised really… I mean, where else can you go after a lobster hat and cigarette sunglasses? We’re all so immune to Gaga’s eccentricities it’s getting harder and harder for the poseur to shock us.
And we’ve got news for Lady G… this idea isn’t that original. In season ten of American’s next top models the wannabes were taken to a slaughterhouse and wrapped in meat bikinis for a photo shoot.
Indeed Gaga’s designer Franc Fernandez is not the first costumier to raid the meat counter. In 1991 the Canadian artist Jana Sterback made a dress out of 50lbs of steak. Primarily displayed at the National Gallery in Canada, a version was later shown in the Tate Modern.
So it art or just repulsive? Not to mention unhygienic. You tell us…
